Getting Help for iData 3
If You're Completely New to iData 3 (return
to top)
When you download iData 3, it comes on a disk image. It should be
automatically mounted (just like a hard disk or CD), with an image like
this appearing below your hard drive icon:
If it does not mount automatically, look for a file called "iData
3.dmg", which will probably be in your Downloads folder (unless you
have reset this in your browser preferences). Double-click
that file to have the disk image mount.
The disk image itself should also open automatically, producing an open
folder that looks like this:
If this folder is not open in the Finder, double-click iData 3 disk
image icon, and the folder should open as shown.
To install iData 3 and its related
files:
1. Drag the iData
3.app icon into your
Applications folder. This
can be done right in the iData 3
disk image window--just drag it as indicated by the green arrow. Please
read
instruction 2 before you run iData 3.
2. If you have previously installed iData Pro
or iData 2, skip to step 3.
New users should open the For
First-Time Users Only folder in the disk image window. From
there, drag
the iData folder to your Documents folder.
NOTE: You should
never replace any of
your existing iData-related folders. The folders that come with this
download are only for people who have never run iData 3 before.
This iData
folder contains two other
folders. The iData 3 Datafiles
folder contains two sample datafiles,
Sample Freeform Datafile.id3 and Sample Field Datafile.id3. The iData 3
Templates folder contains several label and envelope templates.
iData 3 puts the names of the datafiles
that it finds in the iData 3 Datafiles
folder into iData 3's Datafiles
menu, and puts the names of the templates that are in the iData 3
Templates folder into iData 3's Templates
menu. When you create a new
datafile or template, iData 3 saves it to the appropriate folder, so
that it will show up in the corresponding menu.
3. Run iData 3 and, if asked, specify the location
of the iData folder.
In most cases, the first time you run iData 3, you will be prompted to
import all of your iData 2 datafiles and templates. We recommend that
you do this at that time.
iData 2 datafiles cannot be opened directly in iData 3, but must be
imported. To do this at any time, select iData 2 Datafile... in the
Import sub-menu, under the File menu, and select the file to be
imported. Once the import is complete, save the new datafile right away.
You can also import an entire
folder of iData 2 datafiles by selecting
iData 2 Datafiles Folder... in
the Import sub-menu, under the
File menu.
Users of iData Pro v. 1.0.x,
InfoGenie, and QuickDEX (return to top)
Datafiles and card decks from older C&G products, cannot be opened
directly in iData 3, but must be imported. Just select the appropriate
product name from the Import
sub-menu, under the File menu,
and select
the file to be imported. Once the import is complete, save the new
datafile right away.
If you are running iData 3 in demo mode, you will periodically be
prompted to purchase a serial number. Once the 30-day demo period is
over, iData 3 will no longer work without a serial number.
If you purchase a serial number and don't want to wait for iData 3 to
prompt you for it, you can select Licenses... under the iData 3 menu,
and enter it right away. Once you have entered a valid serial number,
that menu item will be disabled.
When you purchase a serial number, Kagi will send you an email with the
subject line: Thanks for your purchase.
You will find your serial number following Your serial number is: in the text
of the message.
Retrieving a Serial Number From an iData 3
Datafile (return to top)
If you store your iData 3 serial number in an iData 3 datafile, and
then find yourself in a situation where iData 3 is asking for your
serial number (as can sometimes happen when changing systems or
drives), remember that you can open iData 3 datafiles in a text editor
or word processor (TextEdit, MS Word, AppleWorks, etc.) and should be
able to find it by searching for "ID30-".
We suggest that you also save the Thanks
for your purchase from Kagi as another way of retrieving your
serial number. Of course, if all else fails, you can contact iData 3
Support with the name and email address that you used when you made
the
purchase, and we should be able to find your serial number for you.
Getting Help for iData 3 (return to top)
iData 3 has built-in, searchable Help, which includes a Tutorial
section. You can access this by selecting User Guide from the Help menu in iData 3. If you are new
to iData 3, select the Tutorial
(Getting Started With iData 3) link at the top of Section 1 of
the Help Topics.
We strongly recommend at least a quick glance through the Help Topics
listing to see what it covers. We get a surprising number of requests
for technical support regarding issues that are covered in the help
pages.
The User Guide also includes a listing of iData 3 features that are new
since iData 2, listed as New Features
in iData 3 in Section 1 of the index. For changes in iData 3
since it was first published, see the
Current Status of iData 3 page.
