With an iData 3, and ".id3" datafile you can add images and sound files to the freeform text area (Notes area). The music notes above are an image. The sound file can be played directly in iData 3. The Japanese text was used in the search.

iData 3 can also open and create ".idm" datafiles that have the same functionality as iData Mobile and iData Lite. If you have an existing ".id3" datafile, a copy can be saved as an ".idm" datafile for use on iData Mobile.

All three versions of iData can mix languages in one record.

iData Mobile for the iPhone will support a mix of languages in one record. Since it is plain text, you cannot add images or sound files.

iData Lite on the Mac only handles ".idm" datafiles, so it only stores information that is compatible with iData Mobile.

The Messier List is a list of astronomical nebulae, and star clusters observed by Charles Messier. It was first published in 1774 and updated through 1784. The main purpose was to provide a list of fuzzy objects in the sky so observers wouldn't mistake them for comets with the less than ideal optics of late 16th century. Amateur telescopes of today, provide much better views than those available to Messier.

The list has proved useful for amateur astronomers learning the night sky.

You have to scroll down to see all of the eleven fields with this font size in iData Mobile.

A record in iData can handle quite a lot of text. This makes iData very useful for storing instructions for professional, hobby, or household processes.

iData Mobile lets you carry them around in your pocket.

Sync Locally is for sharing a datafile between two Macs. Typically a person would have one version on a desktop Mac and the other on a laptop Mac. You can make changes on both and then sync them together.

Sync Through WiFi Network is the easiest way to sync to iData Mobile on an iPhone if you are using AirPort or other local area wireless network.

Sync Through Mobile Me (was .Mac) is for using an iDisk as an intermediary for syncing two Macs. Useful when no WiFi LAN is available.

Since iData Lite is designed primarily as a companion to iData Mobile, it only supports syncing with iData Mobile.

If you have web addresses, email addresses, or phone numbers in the freeform text area that you want to use on the iPhone, this feature helps prepare the data for iData Mobile.

In iData Mobile, web page addresses, email addresses, and phone numbers need to be in fields to make them active. The blue arrows in the fields take you to a view of that field where you can use the contents to launch the web address in Safari, start a Mail message to the email address, or send a phone number to the Phone app for immediate dialing.

This feature in iData Lite is the same as in iData 3.

The images below are all from iData 3, showing its forms, envelopes and labels printing features.
iData Mobile and iData Lite do not print labels or envelopes.

Envelope Printing

Envelopes can be printed quickly with the envelope icon in the toolbar, or in a batch from the selected records of the chosen datafile. You can create custom envelope templates with images, static text (on every envelope), the address from the datafile, and/or any field data from the datafile.

Batch Label Printing

A batch of labels can be printed from the currently selected records in a datafile. This is what the template looks like for an Avery 8764 with an image in the background.

Quick Single Label Printing

A single label can be printed quickly onto any label on the sheet so you don't waste labels. Just clicking the envelope icon in the toolbar brings up this window. Click on the label you wish to use, then click the Printer button.

Using a custom label template to print a form

Here is an example using the California Sales Tax form.

Forms can be handled by making a custom label template where the label size is the page size, and there is only one label on a page. This shows the template editing window with tool pallet. The form was scanned to a JPEG and used for the label background. The purple rectangles are fields from the datafile.

This is the datafile that supplied the data for the form above.
